Game Fundamentals and Card Values
Baccarat is a card game comparing two hands: the Player and the Banker. Understanding the fundamental rules is essential before exploring advanced strategies. Each hand receives two or three cards, with the goal of achieving a total closest to nine.
Card values are straightforward: Aces count as one, numbered cards retain their face value, and face cards (Kings, Queens, Jacks) count as zero. Tens also count as zero. When calculating hand totals, only the rightmost digit matters. For example, a seven and an eight total fifteen, which counts as five in Baccarat.
The game uses either six or eight decks of cards, affecting probability calculations and strategy adjustments. Natural wins occur when either hand totals eight or nine with the first two cards dealt. A third card is drawn based on strict rules that neither player nor banker can deviate from—this is called the tableau of play.
